We also offer a repainting and restoration service.

Traditional sash windows are prone to degradation and deterioration over time. Symptoms of deterioration can include:

  • Rattling from warped wood frames
  • Mould formation from moisture in cracks
  • Jamming and sticking of sashes
  • Draughts from loose panes and frames (see Draught-Proofing Sash Windows)
  • Flaking paint & unkempt appearance

Why would I restore rather than replace my existing sash windows?

  • Often cheaper than replacing windows and frames altogether
  • Better for environment – less wasted materials
  • Faster job completion as frames do not need to be removed
  • Avoid devaluing your home by retaining the original windows

We offer a custom service to fix any or all of these problems which can save you a bundle. In many cases these jobs require the removal of the entire sash to complete the task properly. For this reason we recommend that you commission multiple tasks during a service if necessary.

What happens next?

We address individual problems you may be having with your windows AND/OR carry out a full sash windows restoration service on-site involving:

  • The removal of existing sashes from box frame
  • Carrying out checks on weights
  • Cleaning the glass to professional standards
  • Refitting sashes with new long-lasting nylon cords
  • Re-balancing sash window in the box frame
  • Planing of meeting rails if necessary
  • Fitting new parting and staff beads
  • Fitting new 8.5mm brush pile draught excluders
  • Removing all old window furniture and replacing with brand new furniture (this includes ‘D’ handles, sash lifts, catch, 2x duel position key-operated security locks)
  • Repainting service as an additional extra (see below)

Repainting Sash Windows

In order to correctly repaint sash windows, they must be fully dismantled to access the hard-to-reach areas. Draught-proofing offers the ideal opportunity to repaint and finish the sash windows to their former glory. In addition to the full service outlined above we:

  • Burn off inner liner of sash window box & sill
  • Burn off all paint to sashes (with the exception of the delicate mouldings around glass
  • Mouldings around glass are rubbed down in preparation for paintwork
  • Sand down internal box frame architrave and nosing
  • Repair, fill and sand down any exposed areas
  • Repaint all with three coats of M.V.P (micro-porous) acrylic white paint
  • Completely reseal external box frame
  • Remove any paint on glass up to existing putty lines and replace any loose or missing putty

By the time we finish the job, a minimum of 95% of the draught will be eradicated and you will be able to open your sash windows with ease and without any rattles. This cost-effective work will not require any major structural work to be carried out. The supplied security locks are insurance-approved & child safe.

What is draught-proofing?

Because traditional sash windows are prone to draughts and rattling, we offer a draught proofing service for existing sash windows where time has claimed their efficiency. In doing so, we seal any gaps in the window perimeters where cold air can get through or warm air can escape, eliminate any rattling, opening problems or sound proofing issues caused through poorly fitted sashes.

Why would I draught-proof my sash windows?

  • Reduced energy bills
  • Eliminate rattling
  • Better heat insulation
  • Better sound proofing
  • Stop dust, dirt particles and pollen entering the home
  • Extremely cost-effective

What is involved in a Draft-Proofing?

Fully draught-proofing your sash windows requires the removal of the sashes. This is an excellent opportunity to repaint or refurbish your sash windows at the same time with minimal extra down-time. We can carry out any of the following on-site;

  • Carry out checks on weights
  • Clean the glass to professional standards
  • Refit sashes with new long-lasting nylon cords
  • Re-balance sash window in box frame
  • Plane meeting rails if necessary
  • Fit new parting and staff beads
  • Fit new 8.5mm brush pile draught excluders
  • Remove all old window furniture and replace with brand new furniture (includes ‘D’ handles, sash lifts, catch, 2x duel position key operated security locks)
  • Repainting service is an optional extra.

Are you aware of the restrictions placed on your property or area? For instance, some areas do not allow double glazing! We highly recommend that you consult with your local planning department for any regulations placed on your property.

Listed Buildings
Because listed buildings are individual, unique and preserved, we treat them as such and require information before we can plan the work ahead. If you require replacement windows or doors for your listed building, then planning permission and approvals are required.

You will have to contact your Local Authority for this. Once planning permission is underway, we can help you with the technical drawings that the Local Authority may require.

Conservation Areas
For Conservation Areas you will also need to contact your Local Authority and advise them off the work you would like to carry out. We recommend that you do not start any work before this approval is obtained. In our experience, living in a Conservation Area is not as tightly regulated as a Listed Building but this all depends on your Local Authority.

If technical drawings are required by your Local Authority then we can assist if required.

Confused?
Should you be in any doubt as to what restrictions there are on your property, always contact your listed building consent, conservation office or planning department. Guidance varies from area to area so unfortunately there are no generic contact we can give you, however you may wish to read the guidance from www.planningportal.gov.uk first.

These are the benefits of installing new sash windows or restoring the sash window you already have in your house:

Save Money on your bills
A great deal of heat is lost through single glazed windows; through the glass or the gaps around the windows.

To overcome these problems we can refurbish your existing windows with a full draught excluding system or change your windows to new double glazed sashes fitted with a low-e energy glass on the inside pane of your double glazed unit. Low-e glass is a vital component of energy efficient windows and has a surface coating that allows short wavelength heat from the winter sun to enter your home through the glazing.

This solar energy works with your domestic heating system to warm up your room. A large proportion of that heat would vanish back out through windows made of ordinary glass. However, the Low-e coating reflects that heat back into your room saving you money on your bills.

Maintain the character of your house
We always ensure the rules of listed buildings and conservation areas are adhered to. In addition to this, the skills of our tradesman allow us to produce sash windows tailored to include any design features you may need. This enables us to recreate exact replicas of existing windows.

Providing Peace of Mind
We are lifetime members of the independent warranty scheme (IWS). If you choose our company to carry out the work, your deposit and our guarantee are covered by an insurance backed policy for your peace of mind.

Ensuring prolonged life
We use Grade ‘A’ Redwood timber as the first step towards prolonging the life of your windows. We treat the timber against wet and dry rot and woodworm infestation. In addition we apply three coats of micro porous paint allowing the timber to breathe. The sashes are hung on pre-stretched nylon cord which will never need changing and our full draught excluding system is fitted around the windows all adding to the quality of the windows. These windows will last many years longer than cheap alternatives.

FENSA Registered
We are registered members of FENSA. FENSA stands for the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme and has been set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and other industry bodies. As members of FENSA, we comply with current thermal performance standards, giving added peace of mind.

Improved Airflow
After we have finished fitting or refurbishing your windows you will benefit from improved airflow in your room.

Traditional Sash windows are the perfect partner for the English climate. Weights are attached to the sash cords balancing the sashes. If the top and bottom sashes are open, air will circulate in the room. Cool air will enter the room via the bottom sash and warm air will escape through the top sash – ensuring relief in hot weather.

Stop Draughts & Rattling
We fit a brush pile draught excluding system to existing and new window fitments, resulting in at least 90% of draughts being eradicated and ensuring that the windows will never rattle again.

Window Security
Nothing reduces the security of your home like a tired sash window. New furniture will serve to increase your security level in itself. For added peace of mind, we install key operated sash stops, with provision to open up to 100mm for ventilation.

Noise Reduction
Many of our customers experience outside noise. To overcome this problem people assume that changing to new double glazed windows is the only answer. However, we are very experienced in the use of acoustic safety glass which is decibel rated and more effective than a double glazed unit. The glass reflects noise helping to create a quieter environment in your home. Our trained sales team will be able to discuss the benefits with you and the various decibel ratings.

If you have a project which you require an estimate for submitting as a tender document we are happy to carry this out and provide a full and detailed estimate for you, what we require is the following:

For the above to be completed by us we require a Tender Document fee of £685.00 Plus VAT

Should you not have the above details we are happy to attend site to complete a detailed survey and this will be charged in addition to the above at £320.00 Plus VAT

Drawings can also be provided for approval for manufacturing purposes however these are not suitable for Building Control or Planning permission.

Upon receipt of payment we will endeavour to provide the estimate within ten working days or 14 working days if site survey is required.

Please find our contact page for more details on how to submit. We look forward to hearing from you.
