A Little About Maidenhead and Its Sash Windows

Maidenhead’s development is closely tied to the arrival of the Great Western Railway. When Brunel’s line reached the town in 1838, crossing the Thames on what remains one of the flattest brick-arch railway bridges ever built, it set in motion a period of expansion that would define the town’s architectural character for generations.

By the second half of the nineteenth century, Maidenhead had become an attractive proposition for London commuters, and substantial Victorian red-brick terraces and villas began to spread through areas such as Boyne Hill and the streets surrounding the town centre. These properties, built to house a prosperous and growing population, were fitted as standard with vertical sliding sash windows, typically six-over-six configurations in earlier Victorian builds, transitioning to two-over-two and eventually one-over-one as the century progressed and glazing technology advanced.

The Edwardian era brought a further wave of construction, particularly in the leafier residential streets to the north and west of the town. These larger, more generously proportioned houses, built for the professional classes who valued both space and proximity to the station, frequently feature broad two-over-two sash windows, often set within shallow bay fronts that are characteristic of the period.

Today, Maidenhead sits within the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, which maintains five conservation areas within the town itself: All Saints Boyn Hill, Altwood Road, Castle Hill, Maidenhead Riverside, and the Maidenhead Town Centre conservation area. The surrounding villages, including Bray, Cookham, Pinkneys Green and Burchetts Green, carry their own designations. Within these areas, the replacement or alteration of windows is subject to planning controls, and like-for-like timber sash replacement is typically the only acceptable approach.

Whether your property sits within a designated conservation area or simply reflects the Victorian and Edwardian character that defines much of Maidenhead’s residential stock, the original sash windows are worth preserving and restoring wherever possible. The Specialist in Sash Windows has been manufacturing traditional timber sash windows from our Surrey workshop since 1999, supplying and fitting bespoke replacements and carrying out sympathetic restoration work across Maidenhead and the surrounding SL6 area in Berkshire.
