A little about Sash Windows in Alton, Hampshire…
A Market Town with Deep Roots
Alton is a historic market town in East Hampshire, sitting in the valley of the River Wey at the foot of the North Downs. Its name derives from the Old English Æwielm-tun (a farmstead or settlement by the river source), reflecting its Saxon origins. By the late 13th century, it had developed into an established market town, and its position on the ancient Pilgrims’ Way between Winchester and Canterbury gave it a significance beyond its modest size.
The town has a notable Civil War history: the Battle of Alton in 1643 was fought in its streets, culminating in the famous last stand of Royalist forces in St Lawrence’s Church, where musket-ball marks can still be seen in the stonework.
Victorian Growth and the Period Housing Stock
The 19th century brought significant change to Alton. A new town hall was built in 1813, and the decades that followed saw the gradual introduction of municipal services (waterworks, sewage, gas supply and a cemetery) that underpinned the town’s expansion. The arrival of the railway in 1852, connecting Alton to London via Farnham and Guildford, accelerated residential development considerably and left the town with the Victorian and Edwardian housing stock that remains a defining feature of its older streets today.
Brewing and hop growing were the dominant industries of the Victorian era. The town’s proximity to the hop fields of East Hampshire made it a natural base, and Alton’s brewing heritage is still referenced in its pub culture today.
The terraced and semi-detached Victorian properties built during this period of growth were, almost without exception, fitted with traditional timber sash windows. Tall, well-proportioned, and designed to provide both light and ventilation, these windows remain a characteristic feature of Alton’s older residential streets, and many survive in their original form or have been replaced with similar-style windows.
Conservation Areas and Listed Buildings
Alton’s historic town centre is designated a conservation area, and a number of individual properties in and around the High Street and older residential streets are listed. Within these areas, planning requirements restrict changes to window materials and design, with like-for-like timber replacement typically required when original windows cannot be retained. We are experienced in working within these constraints and can advise on the appropriate specification for listed and conservation-area properties.
Timber Sash and Casement Windows in Alton
Not every period property in Alton features sash windows. Older cottages, Arts and Crafts-influenced houses, and many late Victorian and Edwardian properties were built with traditional timber casement windows, side-hung, outward-opening frames that are equally characteristic of the period. We manufacture and install both to the same exacting standards from our Surrey workshop.
For sash window owners, we offer draught-proofing, slim double glazing upgrades, sash cord and pulley restoration, and full bespoke replacement where required. For casement window owners, we manufacture traditional hardwood and softwood casement windows to period specifications, fitted and finished to match the character of your property.
Whether your home has original windows that need attention or replacements that no longer do it justice, we are happy to visit, assess and advise with no obligation.
