A little about Sash Windows in Whitchurch, Hampshire…
A Small Town with a Long History
Whitchurch is a small market town in the Basingstoke and Deane district of north Hampshire, sitting in the valley of the River Test. Its name, recorded as Witcherche in the Domesday Book of 1086, refers to the white limestone church of All Hallows, one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town and still a prominent feature of its centre today.
The town has held a market since the 13th century, serving the surrounding agricultural villages and the farming community of the Test Valley. The River Test powered a number of mills during this period, and Whitchurch’s milling heritage survives in the form of the Whitchurch Silk Mill – a Georgian watermill on the Test that has been weaving silk continuously since the early 19th century and is now a working museum and the oldest surviving silk mill in the UK.
Victorian Growth and Period Housing
The arrival of the railway in 1854, connecting Whitchurch to Basingstoke and on to London, brought modest but meaningful residential expansion to the town. The Victorian streets that developed during the latter half of the 19th century, along with earlier Georgian and Regency properties in the town centre, represent the bulk of the period housing stock that we work in regularly.
Victorian properties in Whitchurch follow the familiar Hampshire pattern: brick-built terraces and semi-detached houses fitted with traditional timber sash windows, well-proportioned and designed for the room heights of the era. Many of these windows remain in place, and where they have been poorly replaced, owners increasingly look to restore the original character with accurate timber replacements.
Older properties in and around the town centre, some dating to the Georgian period, may feature either sash or casement windows, depending on their age and original specification. We manufacture and install both traditional timber sash windows and wooden casement windows, making us well-suited to the full range of period properties in and around Whitchurch.
Conservation Area
Whitchurch town centre is designated as a conservation area, covering the historic core around the High Street, All Hallows Church and the surrounding streets. Within this area, planning policy requires that changes to windows respect the character and appearance of the streetscape; typically meaning timber replacements where original windows can no longer be retained, and like-for-like specifications in terms of glazing configuration, profiles and finish. We are experienced in advising and working on properties within conservation areas and can guide you through the requirements for your specific property.
