Sash Windows Wimbledon
Few parts of south-west London have accumulated as much period housing as Wimbledon. Its architectural history spans three centuries, from the Georgian villas of Wimbledon Village to the dense Victorian terraces of South Park Gardens and the substantial Edwardian houses on Wimbledon Hill Road, Marryat Road, Woodside and Church Road. Running through all of it, in one form or another, is the traditional timber sash window.
Wimbledon Village and the Georgian Legacy
Wimbledon Village retains some of the oldest domestic architecture in the area, with Georgian and early Victorian properties lining the High Street and the roads leading off it. Georgian design was inseparable from the vertical sliding sash: symmetrical elevations, regular bay spacing, slender glazing bars and tall, narrow openings were the vocabulary of the period. These proportions demanded timber box sash construction, and in the surviving Georgian properties of Wimbledon Village, many original frames remain in place, often now protected under Merton Council’s conservation area designations. Where windows need replacing in these properties, like-for-like timber reinstatement is typically the only option the local planning authority will approve.
Victorian Wimbledon and the Terrace Window
The Victorian expansion of Wimbledon produced the housing that defines much of SW19 today. The South Park Gardens area, the Ministers streets (Gladstone Road, Pelham Road, Balfour Road and their neighbours), and the terraces of West and North Wimbledon are predominantly late Victorian in character: red brick, bay-fronted, ornately detailed, and built with the confident proportions that the era favoured. The sash windows of this period feature heavier mouldings and horn detail than their Georgian predecessors, with larger panes made possible by advances in glass manufacture.
The London Borough of Merton has designated 28 conservation areas, several of which cover Wimbledon’s Victorian streets, including Wimbledon Village, Wimbledon Broadway, West Wimbledon and the John Innes Conservation Area in Merton Park. Within these areas, the retention and sensitive repair of original timber windows is strongly encouraged, and replacement with uPVC or aluminium is routinely refused.
Edwardian Wimbledon and the Arts and Crafts Influence
The Edwardian period brought larger plots, wider windows and the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement to Wimbledon’s higher ground. The substantial detached and semi-detached houses of Wimbledon Hill Road, Arthur Road and the surrounding streets were built with generously proportioned sash windows, often with simpler glazing bar arrangements and more elaborate joinery detailing. The North Wimbledon Conservation Area, designated in 2007, protects a number of these properties, including notable examples designed by architects of the period working in the Arts and Crafts manner.
Bespoke Timber Sash Windows Designed and Made for Wimbledon Properties
Sash Window Specialist designs and manufactures timber sash windows from our Surrey workshop, built to the precise dimensions, profiles and details of the originals they replace or complement. Whether your property is a Georgian villa in Wimbledon Village, a Victorian terrace in South Park Gardens, or an Edwardian house in Wimbledon Park, we can match your existing windows exactly, including the glazing bar profile, horn detail, meeting rail section, timber species, and finish.
We handle every stage in-house: survey, design, manufacture, installation and finishing. If your property sits within one of Merton’s conservation areas or is subject to other planning restrictions, we can advise on appropriate specifications before any work begins.
